Story Point

Each individual sheet in a Storyboard

Picture Superiority effect

Pictures are retained at much higher rates than words

Ordinal Data

data exists in categories that are ordered but differences cannot be determined or they are meaningless. (Example: 1st, 2nd, 3rd); more sophisticated kind of qualitative data

Calculations

allow you to create new data from data that already exists in your data source as well as perform computations on your data

Extract Connection

connection type that often results in a faster experience; snapshot of data source connection that can be modified locally

Line Graph

a graph that is used to look at relationships at two variables over time; also known as Time Series Analysis

Story

a sequence of visualizations that work together to convey information; can tell a data narrative, provide context, demonstrate how decisions relate to outcomes, or simply make a compelling case

Table Calculations

a transformation you apply to the values of a single Measure in your View based on the Dimensions and level of detail

Scatter Plot

A data visualization used to visualize and compare relationships between two Measures in Tableau; needs one Measure in Column and one Measure in Row

Add a Measure to Columns or Rows Shelf

Action that causes an axis to be added to the view which shows the data points that lie within a range of values

Cards

Color, Size, Label, Detail, Tooltip; Located under Marks Shelf

Shelves

Columns, Rows, Pages, Filters, Marks

Live Connection

Connection type that often results in a slower experience; information in Tableau updates with connected data source in real-time

Dashboard Best Practices

Dashboard should be understood in 5 seconds; most important view should go on the top or left side of the dashboard; dashboard review should always be performed

Nominal Data

Data which consists of names, labels, or categories; less sophisticated kind of qualitative data

Discrete Data

Quantitative data that can only take certain values. (i.e. only whole numbers, number of students in a class)

Continuous Data

Quantitative data that can take on any value in a range (i.e. height, time, temperature)

Tableau Packaged Workbook Format

Saving format .twbx; no need to send data source along with Tableau file

Sheet contents

Single view, shelves, cards, legends, a data pane, an analytics pane

Data Interpreter

Tableau built-in tool for preparing data for analysis

Pivot

Tableau feature used to change the data from cross-pad format to column format or vice versa

Split

Tableau function used to separate data that is concatenated

Dashboard Review Questions

What problem does this solve or answer? Is this the best way to display the information? Does everything add value? Is there functional interactivity? Are there clear labels?

Histogram

a chart that displays the shape of a distribution; groups values for a Continuous Measure into ranges or "bins"

Dashboard

a collection of several worksheets and supporting information in a single place, so you can compare and monitor a variety of data simultaneously

Heat Map

a data visualization in which two Measures can be displayed using size and color to express value

Shelves and Cards

area in Tableau that allows you to build the structure of your visualization. Increase the level of detail and control the number of marks in the view by including or excluding data. Add context to the visualization by encoding marks with color, size, shape, text, and detail.

Sheets

area in Tableau where data visualizations are built; contains a single View along with Shelves, Cards, Legends, a Data Pane, and an Analytics Pane

Treemap

data visualization that shows relative proportions; displays data nested in rectangles

Types of Quantitative Data

discrete and continuous

Anscombe's Quartet

four datasets that have the same simple descriptive statistics (mean, median, ... ), yet appear very different when graphed; created to demonstrate both the importance of graphing data before analyzing it and the effect of outliers and other influential observations on statistical properties

Types of Qualitative Data

nominal and ordinal

Pre-attentive Attributes

pieces of information that we can process visually, almost immediately, before sending the information to the attention processing parts of the brain; Processed almost subconsciously

Types of data

qualitative and quantitative
