Continental Army

Was led by General George Washington, was small and was made up of mostly volunteers not trained soldiers. Best tactic of war for colonists was surprise attacks.

Battle of Valley Forge (Pennsylvania)

This battle took place in the winter. Many soldiers had no shoes and no supplies such as blankets or food. Soldiers suffered from starvation. They huddled around campfires to stay alive. But they refused to give up. They were motivated to win the war for independence.

Great Britain

Very hard to replace troops and supplies because they were so far away from home.

The Treaty of Paris (1783)

After the British defeat in Yorktown, Virginia, Great Britain wanted to end the war. They were fighting France, Spain and the colonists. They Treaty of Paris was signed and it recognized the new country - the United States of America. Thousands of Loyalist and many African Americans fled to other countries and Great Britain gave huge amounts of land to the colonists. However, all slaves in the army were NOT freed.

Second Continental Congress

In 1775 Patriot leaders met Philadelphia to organize the colonies for war - 1. Create the Continental Army. 2. Choose a strong leader - George Washington. 3. Decide to declare independence from Great Britain.

Declaration of Independence

Primarily written by Thomas Jefferson and reviewed by other members of the Second Continental Congress. It was a document that presented to George III explaining why the colonists should be free. It also explained that the colonist felt that Great Britain had ruled the colonies unfairly. Congress approved the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. People in the colonies were so excited they cheered, rang church bells, set bonfires and had parades. In New York City, colonists tore down a statue of King George III.

Primary writer of the Declaration of independence. He believed in equality but still owned slaves.
