What happened after they finished working

A heavy rain arrived. Everyone sitting on top of the car can only spread their bags overhead to block the rain. Rose of Sharon gets a chill, and Ma tells Al to go faster so she can be warmed sooner (feet in hot water). Ma asks the whole family except Rose of Sharon to pick up woods and collect dried stuffs.

What is it like working in the small cotton farm

A lot of people are rushing in, but there is only a small piece of land, so cotton can be picked fully before noon. Because it will rain pretty soon, everyone is competing with each other and the nature for more cotton. The cotton is finished picking before 11, and everyone leaves after getting paid. Even though Rose of Sharon only picks 15-10 ponds, she is still proud of her work.

Pa thinks they are in despair now, but Ma think woman is good at adapting, and she thinks everything will come around and get better. After a period of time, everyone will get tougher.

Ruthie tells the other kids that her brother kills a person and now is hiding from the trial. On ly because she has a fight with another girl who says her old brother would beats Tom up. And Ma asks Winfield to find Ruthie, while Ma goes to find Tom to tell him to be careful.

She demands milk (she needs to drink it every second)

What happened to Ruthie

She gets beaten up, and she is ashamed so she hides herself in the corner. Ma stops Winfield from hurting Ruthie's feeling.

She is able to buy anything she likes (meat, beef, milk). Pa even wants syrup for pancakes. But she wants to save money, Ruthie wants to buy boxes of Cracker Jack, after Pa's words, Ma lets her buy it. Uncle John wants to drink again.

She is calm and lonely while the others are all celebrating. She takes the path which Ma walked to Tom, and she felt the weight of her baby. The next morning, she becomes very arduous and even wants to pick cotton.

They are able to have meat every day, and they even drive to Tulare and buy a stove and overalls for everyone. After them, there is no more good spot left.

They help Rose of Sharon to get back on her feet, and then they support her to go back to the boxcars, massaging her feet and giving her hot water. Miss Wainwright offers Rose of Sharon her pain killers and salt, while Ma covers her with more blankets. Al, Pa and Uncle John keep getting dead woods until it fills the top.

How does Tom respond to Ma's question what if he is dead

Tom thinks according to Casy, even though he might die, his spirit will exist and he will be everywhere.
