The Paschal Mystery is God's love and salvation revealed to us through the life, passion, death, and resurrection and glorification of His son Jesus Christ. Jesus' love conquers sin. Jesus breaks the cycle of sin by not giving into it. Jesus' love is offered to all, so that we too can love others. Jesus Christ is the way to Salvation through all ages, because with Jesus' love we too can love others. Jesus shows us the way. We too can experience "new life" in Jesus by following in His ways. The Eucharist re-presents the Paschal Mystery, enabling us to enter into the events of our Salvation, new life with Christ. Jesus becomes the new paschal lamb!

What is the Paschal Mystery? How does it relate to the Jewish Passover?

Passover, the Exodus experience when God led the Hebrews out of slavery to the Promised Land. God heard their cries and rescued them from evil. The lamb was sacrificed and the lamb's blood on the door post saved the Israelites from death.

What is the first Paschal?

Jesus' Sacrifice on the Cross is a passing from the slavery of sin and death to the greatest freedom of all: Resurrection (new life). "Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures." (1 Cor 15:3) Recall that this was prophesied in Genesis, the Protoevangelium. It was sin that killed Jesus, but Jesus did not give into it. The Eucharist re-presents the Paschal Mystery, enabling us to enter into the events of our Salvation, new life with Christ. Jesus becomes the new paschal lamb!

What is the second Paschal?

Jesus' opponents felt threatened by some of Jesus' words and actions. Some judged that Jesus was a false prophet. Members of the Sanhedrin accused Jesus of blasphemy, a crime punishable by death. Jesus was charged with sedition (inciting people to rebel against the authority of the state or monarch), punishable by death under Roman law.

Why did Jesus die?

Responsibility for Jesus' Death is assigned historically to Pontius Pilate. The real instruments of Jesus' crucifixion are sin and sinners. Holding all Jewish people responsible for Jesus' Death is a form of anti-Semitism. The Catholic Church does not condone anti-Semitism.

Why is sin the real instrument of Jesus' death?

Jesus' love conquers sin. Jesus breaks the cycle of sin by not giving into it. Jesus' love is offered to all, so that we too can love others. Jesus Christ is the way to Salvation through all ages, because with Jesus' love we too can love others. Jesus shows us the way. We too can experience "new life" in Jesus by following in His ways.

Why is the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ central to the Christian faith and to your Salvation?

Miracle - powerful sign of God's Kingdom worked by Jesus through "mighty works, wonders and signs. Jesus' words were accompanied by many "mighty works, wonders and signs." and His miracles demonstrate that Jesus is the Messiah and the Kingdom of God is present in him. They reveal God's power and love and show that God does break into human history. Jesus performed miracles to confirm that he was the Son of God. He wanted to strengthen people's faith and to ease their suffering. Each miracle was a sign that God is "here" and that God is love. Jesus as the Messiah did not rely on earthly power. He relied on power from "above". Jesus demonstrates that we too can set our hearts on things "above". Jesus not only speaks in God's name, but heals, loves, forgives, and shows that evil has no power over Him. Faith in Jesus Christ is not just piously or righteously waiting for the Son of Man to come. It is a matter of seeing Jesus in the here and now, and being a part of the Kingdom of God - God's love, justice, truth and Salvation that is working in the world.

For Followers of Jesus, Jesus' miracles were: Dynamis: "acts of power" Ergon: "work" Semeion: "sign" They reveal God's power. They are signs of God's Kingdom. Skeptics wanted to limit God's power, but God's power is unlimited.

How did Jesus differ from other healers of his day?

The Eucharist re-presents the Paschal Mystery, enabling us to enter into the events of our Salvation, new life with Christ. Jesus becomes the new paschal lamb! We honor what Jesus tells us to do and every time we gather for sacrament we remember the Holy Thursday/Good Friday experience. We remember how much God loves us and God does save. Our relationship and closeness with God helps us to be our very best selves. Jesus' ways help save us and at Eucharist, we take in and consume Jesus and He becomes part of us and this is why we go to the sacrament weekly. We stay close to Jesus, we also stay close to his teachings. His teachings become re-present to us in that moment and challenges us to live them out in our everyday lives.

How does the Sacrament of Eucharist represent the Paschal Mystery, enabling us to enter into the events of our Salvation. Why should Christians take part in this Sacrament?

Mary Magdalene was with Jesus at the cross when he died and when He was laid in the tomb along with Mary, the mother of Jesus. Brought oils to anoint Jesus' body along with Salom and Mary, the mother of James.

Mary Magdalene

Martha, the sister of Lazarus said "even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you... I know he will rise in the resurrection on the last day." Jesus told her, "I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who is coming into the world." We must believe in and follow the Lord to have eternal life. The Raising of Lazarus symbolizes that through Jesus, our own resurrection takes place! In the Man Born Blind miracle, a poor blind man who was asking for help with money for his situation was brought to Jesus. Jesus began healing him by touching his eyes, but the man didn't like this and thought Jesus was hurting him. He ended up being healed and was able to see after washing his eyes. The blind man believed in the Son of Man, and he was healed. Just as he believed, we must believe and be healed of all our sins.

To recognize a miracle, a person must believe that God does break into human history. Explain the meaning of the Raising of Lazarus miracle and the Man Born Blind miracle.
