Theory of planned behaviour [Albarracin et al]
Theory of planned behaviour intro definition
Proposed by Icek Ajzen. TPB intends to explain all behaviors over which people have the ABILITY to EXERT self-CONTROL. Theory of planned behaviour states that there are three factors which influences behavioural intentions and further influences behaviour.
Albarracin et al procedure
Researchers calculated the average estimates of PREDICTIVE VALIDITY with TRA and TPB.
Albarracin et al conclusion
Theory of planned behaviour and theory of reasoned action are highly successful PREDICTORS of condom use. People are more likely to use condoms if they have PREVIOUSLY formed CORRESPONDING intentions.
Albarracin et al aim
To examine how well the theories of REASONED ACTION and planned behavior predict condom use.
TPB three factors
- Attitude toward act or behaviour is an individual's belief of a certain behaviour or act makes POSITIVE+ or NEGATIVE- contribution to that person's life - Subjective norm refers to the belief about whether most people APPROVE or disapprove of the behavior. - PERCEIVED behavioural control the key component of the theory, refers to a person's PERCEPTION of the EASE or difficulty of performing the behavior.
Albarracin et al method
- Meta-analysis of 42 published & non-published articles involving 30,270 participants 96 data sets - mean age of participants was 25, 77% completed high school, and ethnic minorities and majorities were both adequately represented in the sample
Albarracin et al findings
。Perceived behavioral control was related to condom use intentions and condom use. The average correlation between intention and behaviour in these models is 0.51. 。It makes a difference whether behaviour is assessed retrospectively or prospectively. - The intention-behaviour relationship is weaker for behaviours assessed prospectively (0.45) than for behaviours assessed retrospectively (0.57). (However, even 0.45 is sufficient enough to say that the predictive validity of the model is high.) → In former case, assessments of intentions and behaviour are carried out at the same time, in latter case, assessed at different time periods.
