thermohaline circulation
how long does this process take?
1000 years
what could happen to it bc of global warming
As a result of global warming, the thermohaline conveyor belt could shut down because the water is not getting cold enough to downwell. The thermohaline conveyor has naturally shut down in the past, as evidenced by Greenland ice cores, when the North American icecap melted and deposited warm, freshwater into the ocean.
how does thermohaline circulation affect the climate?
Thermohaline Circulation transports energy throughout the ocean, playing an important role in regulating temperature.
how does thermohaline circulation work?
Thermohaline circulation is a worldwide current system in which the warmer, fresher water moves along the surface while the colder, saltier water moves beneath it. Thermo means temperature and haline means salinity, so the whole basis of movement is driven by the downwelling of cold salty water at the poles and movement of the warmer fresher water on the surface by wind and waves.
where do the branches connect with the entire ocean?
at the poles
② Which properties of water and which forces help to overturn the ocean?
temperature and salinity
③ What are the primary ocean layers, and why are the layers separate?
they are separated by temperature and salinity. Mixed, thermocline, deep ocean
