Unit 1 Intro to Info Tech
Server
A computer program that processes the requests of another set of programs, called "clients"; the server performs work on behalf of clients, which may run on the same computer as the server or connect to it through a network
Hard Disk Drive
A device that uses a disk to permanently store all computer data within files and folders; these drives spin very fast (up to 7,200 RPM) w/ data accessible from any place on the drive
Network
A network connects two or more computers to allow them to share information (networking)
Component
A part of a larger whole ( the CPU and hard drive, for instance, can be referred to as computer components; so can much smaller items including integrated circuits, switches, and extremely small transistors)
Bluetooth
A wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances
Exponentially
Describes a process that becomes more and more rapid, usually expressed as a rate of change
Data
Information processed or stored by computer; examples include text documents, images, audio clips, and software applications; all kinds of data are stored in files and folders on a computer's hard, DVD, CD drives
Firewall
Software that protects a computer by preventing unauthorized access and protecting it from being infected by undesirable data from Internet
Browser
Software that searches or "surfs" the web to find information online
Monitor
The monitor displays the computer's user interface and open programs, allowing the user to interact w/ the computer, typically using the keyboard and mouse
Moore's Law
The theory that such computing characteristics as processing speed, memory capacity, and sensors double every two years; a rate described as exponential
Device
Used interchangeably w/ the word "component," a device can be drive, a scanner or any computer-related object that acts as a tool to perform work
