At Lexington, the British destroyed the colonists' weapons by lighting them on fire. George Washington wanted to trap the British in Boston by luring them there. The British thought they had a lot of weapons, so they went to Boston to destroy them. This gave Washington enough time to acquire gunpowder from the other colonies to attack the British.

July 1775 - Nothing happened happened for a while after Lexington and Concord and the Battle of Bunker Hill, so the colonists were not sure if they were still at war with Britain. The 2nd Continental Congress sent this as an offer of peace to Britain.

July 4, 1776 - The colonists' break up letter with England. Explains the reasons for the colonists' actions (grievances) and includes ideas from Enlightenment philosophers like John Locke.

Why didn't the Olive Branch Petition work?

Peace was not achieved because it didn't get there in time. King George had already sent troops to the colonists to "bring them to justice." He never reads the letter.

Who won the Battle of Bunker Hill?

The colonists won two of the three battles, but they ran out of weapons. The British won the third attack and therefore won this battle.

Though the colonists lost the battle, it was only because they ran out of weapons. They inflicted huge losses on the British (killed more people), lost only a quarter of their people, and won two out of the three battles.
