Order of Operations

A rule for evaluating expressions; First perform the operations in parenthesis, then compute powers and roots, the perform all of the multiplication and division from left to right, the perform all of the addition and subtraction from left to right.

constant

A value that does not change

Algebraic expression

An expression that contains at least one variable

variable

a symbol used to represent a quantity that can change

Commutative Property of Addition

the property of that states that two or more numbers can be added in any orders without changing the sum

Associative Property of Addition

the property that states all real numbers a, b, and c, the sum is always the same, regardless of their grouping

Commutative Property of Multiplication

the property that states that two or more numbers can be multiplied in any orders without changing the sum

Identity Property of Addition

the property that states the sum of zero and any number is that number

evaluate

to find the value of a numerical or algebraic expression

like term

two or more terms that have the same variable raised to the same power

Numerical Expressions

An expression that contains only numbers and operations.

equivalent expression

Expressions that have the same value for all of the values of the variables

Associative Property of Multiplication

For all numbers a,b, and c ab×c=(a×b)×c=a×(b×c)

Power

The number produced by raising a base to an exponent

Exponent

The number that indicates how many times the base is used as a factor

coefficient

The number that is multiplied by the variable in an algebraic expression

term

The part of an expression that are added or subtracted

Distributive Property

The property that sates if you multiply a sum by a number you will get the same result if you multiply each addend by that number and then add products.

Identity Property of Multiplication

The property that states that the product of 1 and any number that i that number.
