Upper extremity- Serratus anterior- Pectoralis minor
Deltoid origin
1. anterior portion: lateral portion of the clavicle 2. middle portion: acromion process 3. posterior portion: scapular spine
subclavius innervation
nerve to subclavius
pectoralis minor action
1. depresses the scapula 2. downwardly rotates the scapula
pectoralis major origin
1. medial portion of clavicle 2. sternum and upper 6 costal cartilage
Deltoid action
1. anterior portion: flexes and internally (medially) rotates the arm 2. middle portion: abducts the arm (all) 3. posterior portion: extends and externally (laterally) rotates the arm
teres minor action
1. externally rotates the arm 2. functionally helps produce inferior translation and compression into glenoid during arm elevation (along with the other rotator cuff muscles)
Teres minor insertion
1. lowest of three facets of the greater tubercle of the humerus 2. capsule of the shoulder joint
Infraspinatus insertion
1. middle facet of the greater tubercle of the humerus 2. capsule of the shoulder joint
Serratus anterior action
1. protracts the scapula 2. assists to upwardly rotate the scapula 3. Functionally prevents winging
Supraspinatus insertion
1. uppermost of three facets of the greater tubercle of the humerus 2. capsule of the shoulder joint
Teres minor origin
middle half of the scapula's lateral border
pectoralis major innervation
1. Clavicular portion: lateral pectoral nerve 2. Sternal portion: lateral and medial pectoral nerves
subscapularis insertion
1. Lesser tubercle of the humerus 2. Capsule of the shoulder joint
Supraspinatus action
1. abducts the arm (almost solely for first 20 degrees) 2. functionally helps guide humeral head into central glenoid with elevation of shoulder
pectoralis major action
1. adducts teh arm 2. internally rotates the arm 3. horizontal adduction of arm 4. flexes the shoulder (from extended position)
subclavius insertion
inferior surface of clavicle
pectoralis minor origin
outer and anterior surface of ribs 3-5 near cartilage
subscapularis origin

Supraspinatus origin
supraspinous fossa
subscapularis innervation
upper and lower subscapular nerves
infraspinatus action
1. externally rotates the arm 2. functionally helps produce inferior translation and compression into glenoid during arm elevation (along with the other rotator cuff muscles
teres major action
1. internally rotates the arm 2. extends the arm (from a flexed position) 3. adducts the arm
Serratus anterior origin
Anterolateral surface of the upper 8 or 9 ribs
Serratus anterior insertion
Costal aspect of the medial border of the scapula
Deltoid innervation
axillary nerve
teres minor innervation
axillary nerve
pectoralis minor insertion
coracoid process
Deltoid insertion

subclavius action
depresses and stabilizes clavicle
subclavius origin

Infraspinatus origin
infraspinous fossa
subscapularis action
internally rotates the arm
pectoralis major insertion
lateral lip of the biciptital groove
Serratus anterior innervation
long thoracic nerve
teres major origin
lower 1/3 of lateral border of scapula
teres major innervation
lower subscapular nerve
teres major insertion
medial lip of bicipital groove of humerus
