How did Thomas Edison contribute to industrialization?
Edison perfected the incandescent light bulb—patented in 1880—and later invented an entire system for producing and distributing electrical power. Another inventor, George Westinghouse, along with Edison, added innovations that made electricity safer and less expensive.
What did the Sherman Antitrust Act do?
In 1890, the Sherman Antitrust Act made it illegal to form a trust that interfered with free trade between states or with other countries.
Why did children often work in factories?
With little time or energy left for school, child laborers forfeited their futures to help their families make ends meet.
What impact did electricity have on factories?
More important, electricity allowed manufacturers to locate their plants wherever they wanted—not just near sources of power, such as rivers. This enabled industry to grow as never before.
What is a monopoly?
One way to create a monopoly was to set up a holding company, a corporation that did nothing but buy out the stock of other companies.
