He saw the horrid conditions of meat, how it was prepared, and many of the disgusting ingredients put into meat. Much of the meat was a health hazard and yet it was sold to unsuspecting Americans. Sinclair wrote about his experience in a book called The Jungle exposing the bad practices of meat packing companies. This eventually caused the US government to step in with meat regulations and establishing the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) to watch over food companies.
