compound
Combination of substances (elements) that are chemically combined (bonded)
periodic table
a chart that organizes information about all of the known elements according to their properties
chemical formula
code that uses chemical symbols and subscripts to identity the number and types of atoms in a compound
metalloid
elements on the dividing line of the Periodic Table. Elements have some properties of both metals and non metals
metal
elements on the left side of the Periodic Table. Known by their properties: Shiny, ductile, and malleable
nonmetal
elements on the right side of the Periodic Table. Known by their properties: Dull in color, brittle, and not malleable.
period
horizontal row in the periodic table.
coefficient
in a chemical formula, the large number in front that tells how many molecules are present
subscript
in a chemical formula, the small number that identifies how many atoms of each type are in a molecule.

matter cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change from one form to another
chemical symbol
one or two letter code that represents an element; derived from the Latin name for the element
reactant
the substances that exists before a reaction occurs (ingredients)
product
the substances that remain after a reaction takes place (resulting molecules)
group
vertical column in the periodic table, another name for "family". Elements in the same group or family have similar properties.
family
