Divine Right of Kings

Doctrine that states that the right of ruling comes from God and not people's consent

Oliver Cromwell

English general and statesman who led the parliamentary army in the English Civil War.

William and Mary

Invited by parliament, they became King and Queen of England in 1688. This demonstrated the power of Parliament over the throne of England.

Puritans

A religious group who wanted to purify the Church of England. They came to America for religious freedom and settled Massachusetts Bay.

commonwealth

A self-governing territory associated with another country

Cavaliers

In the English Civil War (1642-1647), these were the troops loyal to Charles II. Their opponents were the Roundheads, loyal to Parliament and Oliver Cromwell.

Toleration Act of 1689

granted Puritans, but not Catholics, the right of free public worship
