Equal Pay Act

1963 law that required both men and women to receive equal pay for equal work

Title IX

A United States law enacted on June 23, 1972 that states: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."

Protected Classes

Individuals of a minority race, women, older people, and those with disabilities who are covered by federal laws on equal employment opportunity

Americans with Disabilities Act

Passed by Congress in 1991, this act banned discrimination against the disabled in employment and mandated easy access to all public and commercial buildings.

Quid Pro Quo

Use of one's authority or power to coerce another into unwanted sexual relations or to punish another for his/her refusal.

Workplace Bullying

the repeated unethical and unfavorable treatment of one or more persons by others in the workplace

Age Discrimination in Employment Act

Act that prohibits discrimination in employment for persons age 40 and over except where age is a bona fide occupational qualification.

Pregnancy Discrimination Act

Act that prohibits discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions.

Discrimination

Behaving differently, usually unfairly, toward the members of a group.

Harassment

Behaviour such as unwelcome comments, looks, jokes, suggestions or physical contact that causes stress or intimidation for staff

Title VII

Civil Rights Act of 1964—forbids discrimination based on sex, race, color, national origin, or religion.

Hostile Work Environment

Creating an intimidating, hostile or offensive working or education environment through repetitive verbal or physical conduct- of a sexual nature.

Sexual Harassment

comments, gestures, or physical contacts of a sexual nature that are deliberate, repeated, and unwelcome
