Emperor Wudi furthered economic growth by improving canals and roads, He had granaries set up across the empire so the government could buy grain when it was abundant and sell it at stable prices when it was scarce. He reorganized finances and imposed a government monopoly on iron and salt.

Based on what you know about Confucianism, how do you think the civil service examination system affected the nature of Chinese government?

I think that the civil service of Confucianism gave the idea that officials should win positions by merit rather than through family background.

Describe several of the achievements that helped make the Han period a golden age in Chinese civilization.

Science: Han scientists wrote textbooks on chemistry, zoology, botany and other subjects. Astronomers carefully observed and measured movements of the stars and planets. Medicine: Chinese physicians diagnosed diseases, experimented with herbal remedies and other drugs and developed anesthetics. Some doctors explored the use of acupuncture. Technology: Cai Lun invented a method for making durable paper out of wood that is still used today. Chinese inventors also advanced shipbuilding and invented the rudder to steer the ship. They also invented the fishing reels, wheelbarrows and the suspension bridge. Arts: The Han cities built temples, palaces and parks. Artisans produced delicate jade and ivory carvings.

Describe one major difference between the Qin Government and Han Government.

The Han dynasty lowered the taxes imposed by the Qin Dynasty and eased the harsh legalistic policies of the Qin Dynasty.
