Truman hoped that the use of the bomb would and it's astonishing effects would be enough for Japan to surrender and they would not have to invade them. The US dropped the bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasak.

Many people argued that they killed too many innocent Japanese, and it was too harsh of a punishment because when they (Japan) bombed Pearl Harbor, the catastrophes weren't nearly as bad when the US used the atom bomb. But, others argue that we gave Japan a chance to surrender, but they didn't take it.
