When is summarization appropriate in the medical setting?

When the doctor engages in a highly technical discussion with another health care provider in front of the patient, but is not speaking to the patient.

It is the most commonly used mode in medical interpreting.

Consecutive interpreting.

This interpreting mode is also known as "pause" interpreting (because the speaker pauses to wait for the interpretation of what they said)

Consecutive interpreting.

Four modes of interpreting

Consecutive, simultaneous, sight translation, and summarization.

Consecutive interpreting

Interpreter interprets after the speaker is done speaking.

Why is Consecutive interpreting is commonly used in medical interpreting?

It is less confusing than the simultaneous mode.

Summarization

Occurs when one person speaks at length, or when two or more people speak at the same time, and the interpreter summarizes the important points at the end.

Interpreter reads a text written in one language (source language), and verbally renders the text into another language (target language). NOTE: Interpreter does not provide a written translation of the document in question.

Sight translation.

When is simultaneous interpreting useful within the medical interpreting?

Simultaneous interpreting can be useful in a mental health setting, if the patient launches into an emotional narrative or description that cannot be interrupted, or in cases where the time is critical, such as medical emergency.

May also be appropriate when interpreting for family members watching a surgery.

Summarization.

This mode is not recommended in a medical setting because of the great potential for errors and omissions. Should not be used as a technique for editing material that interpreter feels irrelevant.

Summarization.

What is a mode?

The way in which something is done.

Simultaneous interpreting

•Interpreter interprets while the speaker is speaking, with a 3-4 second delay. •Commonly used in legal or conference settings but infrequently in medical settings.
