Grand Council
Definition: Decisions of the confederacy were made by a council of fifty chiefs. These chiefs were the Hoyaneh. Haudenosaunee leaders were men, but the clan mothers chose them and advised them. Example: Gantowisa had to discuss her issues with the Hoyaneh, it then got carried over to the Grand Council to decide what can resolve the issue.

Example: A first nations group that lived in longhouses and were mostly agricultural, they stayed in one place and farmed for as long as the land provided. They did not move with the seasons

Definition: female leaders of clans in Haudenosaunee society. Example: a leader in haudenosaunen that managed the Hoyaneh. They groomed the future girls to be clan mothers

They pass down their title to their daughters or relatives who are girls. If the cheifs they pick are not worthy of their title then their title is revoked.
