1/5 + 6/10 = ?

4/5

Factor

Factors are numbers you can multiply together to get another number.

Equivalent Fractions

Fractions that have different numerators and denominators but name the same amount. Ex. 1/2 and 2/4 or 3/4 and 9/12

1/2 - 2/4

Common Multiple

A common multiple is a number that is a multiple of two or more numbers. Ex. The multiples of 3 are: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 The multiples of 6 are: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36 *The common multiples between the two are 6, 12, and 18

What is adding like fractions?

Adding fractions are adding two fractions together with the same denominators and adding the two numerators together by placing the answer from the numerator over the denominator.

1/3 + 1/2 = ?

5/6

8/10 - 1/3

7/15

Simplest Form

A fraction is in simplest form when its numerator and denominator have no common factor other than 1. Ex. 1/5 and 3/5 are in their simplest form because they have no other common factor other than 1.

Least Common Multiple (LCM)

A least common multiple (LCM) is the least number that is a multiple of both numbers. The multiples of 3 are: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 The multiples of 6 are: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36 * The least common multiple is 6

Benchmark Fraction

When you estimate a fractional amount you can use a benchmark fraction that is close to the actual amount. Ex. about 1/2, or about 1/4

5/4 + 10/12

2 1/12

1/2 + 2/1

2 1/2

Common Denominator

Fractions that have the same denominator have a common denominator. Ex. 4/12 and 3/12 have a common denominator

What are the names of the two parts of a fraction?

Top part of a fraction is called a Numerator Bottom part of a fraction is called a Denominator ex. 3/4

5/4 + 5/3

2 11/12

1/2 - 1/4

What is adding unlike fractions

Adding unlike fractions can be a little tricky. But first you must look at the two denominators and multiply the two denominators together to get the number that is common between the two denominators. Once that number is obtained draw a line and place both numbers underneath the line. Then tell how many times the numerator will go into the new (same denominators) on both fraction parts then add numerators over the new denominator and simplify if needed. If by chance the answer is an improper fraction, divide the denominator into the numerator to get a mixed fraction.

Least Common Denominator (LCD)

The least common denominator (LCD) of two fractions is the least common multiple of the denominators. Ex. Multiples of 2: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 Multiples of 3: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 *So the least common denominator (LCD) would be 12
