Multiplane camera by Walt Disney to display depth w/ many diff layers to the picture and creates movement and allows the character to move across screen 1945: Momotaro's Divine Sea Warriors -1st full feature animated film
anime characteristics
Variety of genres and subject matter. complex, cross influence between manga (for the story) and film (for the camera shots). something for everyone

less frames, uses other features to convey movement (eg, eyebrows, sound), not realistic but faster process
Adverse effects of anime
public/govt concerned w/ its influence esp porn anime on society as people who did terrible acts on others (esp young girls) were avid watchers of it
1920s developments
small scale productions (1st studio: Kitayama eiga seisaku-sho in 1921), internationally recognized, stories based on myth and folktales or for educational purposes. didn't want to impede on morals, used benshi and traditional musicians but Ofuji Noboru challenged it
