How many bits does Iv6 have?

2^128

How many bits does Iv4 have?

2^32

Why is latency important?

It tells you how long something will take to get from one place to another which is how you are able to travel things across vast regions in such a short period of time

How do you suppose a request travels from one computer to another? How does the request know where to go?

It travels through networks/routers and it knows where to go because of IP Addresses

Citizen Science

Science that harnesses the power of mainly individuals to solve hard, complex problems

How does the internet work?

The Internet is a network of networks. It connects to an Internet service provider (ISP). The Internet has no center and no one owns it. -The Internet was designed to be redundant and fault-tolerant—meaning that if one network, connecting wire, or server stops working, everything else should keep on running.

Bitrate

The amount of date (in bits) that can be sent in a fixed amount of time

Explain what the internet is?

The internet is a way that all information is accessible to everyone. Also, it is a network of networks that has a certain protocol that is agreed upon all.

Latency

The latency of a system is the time it takes for a bit to travel from sender to receiver (fiber optic cables have low latency which means that it takes little time)

Networks

a group of 2 or more computer systems linked together

Internet Protocol (IP)

a protocol that defines a structure of an internet address and assigns a unique address to every device on the internet

Protocal

a widely agreed upon set of rules that standardize communication between machines

Fiber Optic Cables

able to send bits from router to router across long distances, but they are very expensive

In the 21st century, we all have various networks that we connect on - mobile data, home networks, and school networks for example. Rank the networks you use by their latency, bandwidth, and bitrate. It is OK to guess!

ask mr alfaro

Why is bandwidth important?

it allows things on the internet to run fast or slow (more bandwidth = faster)

How is the bandwidth of a network measured?

it is measured in bitrates (higher bitrate = higher bandwidth)

What is the latency of a system?

it is the time it takes from it to send from sender to receiver

What is the bitrate of a system?

the amount of data in bits that can be sent in a fixed amount of time

Bandwidth

the capacity of data transfer in a system (measured by bitrate)

What is the purpose of the IP Address?

to help locate other computers on different networks, this is scalable and easier to access from different devices
