Old immigrants before 1890

coming from western and northern europe, culturally similar, language, representative govt. protestant, light skinned, white anglo saxon protestant, high literary rates

americanization movment

education program designed to help immigrants assimilate to american culture

Reasons for immigration

exceeding European population, oppportunities like jobs and freedom, escape poverty(italy), escape religious persecution(jewish)

Birds of Passage

intended to immigrate temporarily to earn money and return home

American Protective Association 1887

led anti catholic attacks, business colleges and social clubs refused to admit jews

Angel Island

main immigration processing station in the west coast in san fransisco, mainly chinese

Ellis Island

main immigration processing station on the east coast and located in the NY harbor

New Immigrants ater 1890

mainly from southern and eastern europe, improvished, culturally different, little democracy, non-english speakers, high illiteracy rates, influx of judeasm and roman catholic, did not want to assimilate, played a big part in the political system

Nativism

overt favoritism to native born americans, let to anti immigrant groups

Chinese exclusion act of 1882

reaction on Irish violence inflicted on the chinese in CA, canned chinese immigration for 10 years. students, teachers, visitors, were exceptions. extended for another 10 years in 1892, in 1902 restricted immigration for good until 1943

1897 literacy test

the immigration restriction league unfluenced congress to require 40 or more questions on a literacy test or they'll be denied entry. this is vetoed by 3 presidents until 1917 when it passed `
