Isaac inherited Abraham's position as patriach. The problem was he had twin boys: Jacob and Esau. Which son someday would take his position as patriach? It couldnt be divided. The older son should rightfully get the position. However, God wanted the younger son Jacob to get this position. Jacob was a story of conflict. It was surprising that God wanted Jacob to be Isaac's successor because he was a trickster. He was a trickster to his brother. He did alot of mean things. However, he was considered to carry one quality that was crucial to living out the covenant which was the determination, perseverance and never giving up attitude. He manage to prosper through life. He got married, had many children and grew very rich. Jacob did reconcile with his father and brother twenty years later. God renewed his covenant and changed his name to Israel.

Sant'Andrea in Mantua

The Basilica of Sant'Andrea is a Roman Catholic co-cathedral and minor basilica in Mantua, Lombardy (Italy). It is one of the major works of 15th-century Renaissance architecture in Northern Italy. Commissioned by Ludovico III Gonzaga, the church was begun in 1462 according to designs by Leon Battista Alberti on a site occupied by a Benedictine monastery, of which the bell tower (1414) remains. The building, however, was finished only 328 years later. Though later changes and expansions altered Alberti's design, the church is still considered to be one of Alberti's most complete works. It looms over the Piazza Mantegna.

Renaissance period

On the right is his friend Georges de Selve a French bishop who also served as an ambassador. • The table has objects on it representing the four humanist sciences of music, arithmetic, geometry, and astronomy. The Islamic rug means there is a connection to the wider world. The globe speaks to European exploration and discovery. The lute has a broken string and the hymnal next to it is open to a hymn written by Martin Luther and these symbolize the discord created by Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. • The title is The Ambassadors and it means that these two people are accredited diplomats sent to be a representative of their country in a foreign country. • The painter's motto was, "remember you must die." The stretched skull which is visible up close and viewed at the right angle says that death cuts across life and shows itself by surprise.

• This is the last supper which is the story of Jesus just before he was arrested, tried, and executed on the cross. It is where he broke bread and gave it to his apostles as well as wine and the sacrament of Holy Communion comes from. • Jesus is in the center and the 12 apostles are at the table as well. All the apostles except Judas have light around their heads. • There are ghostly figures above representing witnesses from heaven. • Everyone else in the painting are servants and other people going about their lives.
