North, East, South, West

Are initialized signs. The direction of each sign depends on its compass point.

To Have

Can be used for possession ("I have a sister") as well to show something exists ("Is there a bathroom?"). In English you say "Is there?" , and in ASL you sign have. Use the Question-Maker NMS when using have to ask a question.

CL: Claw 5

Conveys distance between two places. Is a spatial placeholder for one or more places. Concepts like nearby, next to, not too far, across from, and more places can be shown by varing the space between two hands forming the Cl: Claw 5 handshape. Is often use to describe the the location of building in relation to each other.

The Deaf world

For many people today, intiale exposure to the deaf community and ASL comes from seeing Deaf characters and sign language on TV.

Station

In English, station refers to a location where a service or operation is preformed. For several ASL signs, this meaning is already included in the sign. Ex: people fill vehicles with gas at a gas station. Adding a separate sign for station would be redundant!

spatial visualization

Is the ability to describe spatial relationships both receptively and expressively. It describes the surroundings of a house or other structure, describe where an object is located in relations to others, this creates a strong 3-D image. This skill is essential to sign complex thoughts and descriptions. The goal is to provide enough detail for someone to create a mental image of what the signed sees, as if their going on a virtual tour. The key is to describe it as your own perspective. Start with big picture (House, two floors) then select a starting point (front door) and describe what your eye see as you move around, across or through the room.

curious

Is used to introduce a question or to ask for an opinion. Use this sign the same way you say "I was wondering" in English.

To Ride in

Is used to show that you are taking some kind of transportation. Don't use to take, it like saying to steal the vehicle.

Rooms

Many signs for rooms around the house reflect the activity generally associated with that room. Ex: where one cooks is the kitchen; where one sleeps is the bedroom; and so on. In addition to concepts like these, several places use classifiers.

NMS: Cha

Mouth the word chat while signing "big" or "mansion" to emphasis an objects size.

Individualism

The domaint culture value in the United States and Canada is called individualism. This is a social pattern or expectation that the individual is loosely connected to his or hers community.

CL: 1 and CL: 3

Turning left or right depends on how the turn is made: On foot or in vehicle. Do not add separate signs for left or right when using CL:1 or 3. Simply maneuver the handshape to show a left or right turn.

Used to describe birds eye view of many buildings or crowds of people.

Blow air

Used to describe that you have nothing, no money, not a dime.

Uses a NMS: use your lips to mouth diff-diff-diff
