Although most operations can be automated, there are many applications where automation is not cost effective. Greatly dependent on production quantity and the nature of the operation. The impact of automation on the work force should also be considered carefully.

Explain the difference between an automated guided vehicle and a self-guided vehicle.

An automatic guided vehicle follows a pre-programmed path, using tape or embedded wires as guides for determining its path. Self-guided vehicles calculate in real-time their own paths and correct for deviations as necessary. Capability of detecting obstacles in their path and taking preventing measures.

Do you think automation is generally regarded as evolutionary rather than revolutionary?

Automation can be considered evolutionary because it basically assists in the completion of tasks that have been carried out manually.

Linear Pattern-

Convenient because the movement of the part takes place along with the manufacturing sequence. Modifications are easier to implement, where as with the circular pattern it is very difficult to add one or several more power heads. Furthermore, the linear transfer line can accommodate larger workpieces and a larger number of operations can be included in the line.

Circular Pattern-

Process starts and ends at the same location. Part return to the same location is not always desirable if the part has to be moved further to another machine for subsequent processing.

Industrial Automation-

Technique, method, or system of operating or controlling a process by highly automatic means, as by electronic devices, reducing human intervention to a minimum.

Variable-sequence Robots-
