Checklist

A list of skills and abilities to be observed. When observer sees the child demonstrate one, he or she places a mark next to the item.

Work sample

A product created by a child that becomes documentation of the development of a skill.

Running record

An account of what a child is doing as it is happening.

Standardized tests

Are used to document a child's ability to compare and contrast, solve problem, classify objects, put things in sequential order, arrive at conclusions, and other skills.

Anecdotal Record

Is A narrative account of an event written shortly after it occurred .

Rating scale

Is used to measure a behavior, skill, or ability based on a series of quality points or a continuum.

Norm - referenced

Means the results are used to compare the skills of the child to typically developing peers.

Quantify

Means to assess somethings numerical value. This is a highly subjective process and is often used to gather an observer's judgments, based on expertise.

Frequency count

Records how Often a behavior happens .

Documentation

Refers to everything in a child's file, but that word can have a special meaning when it is used in reference to child observation. Then, documentation refers to records the help identify a child who may be at risk of maltreatment, delay, disability or to relay a suspicion of child abuse or neglect.

Phonetically

Refers to the way words sound, rather than how they are spelled. For example, you might record that a child said, "cookie peas," as opposed to writing, "cookie,please."

Time sample

Reports what activities a child chooses to do during a given time period, which is usually a half hour .

Conversation

Word for word accounts of what you children said while being interviewed by a provider.
