dropping and catching ball with both hands

item of upper limb coordination *child holds tennis ball in both hands and extends both arms in front of their body so the ball is at shoulder heights teaching: use both hands to drop the ball, and use both hands to catch the ball, drop the ball without any additional force, move as needed to catch the ball and attempt to catch it 5 times! *2 practice attempts! *if necessary, reteach between task attempts script: drop and catch the ball with both hands. Ready? *throw 5 catches

catching the tossed ball- one hand

item of upper limb coordination *child stands just behind the end line and faces examiner* *from just behind examiner throwing line 10 ft away from the examinee, toss the ball underhand so that it comes down between child's shoulder and waist, and child should catch ball with preferred hand* *record correct catches from 5 total attempts!* *Catch is incorrect if they trap the ball against their body, catch ball with BOTH hands, or catch ball with non preferred hand* read minister attempt if you throw it incorrectly teaching: use the preferred hand only to catch the ball, move as needed to catch the ball, and attempt to catch the ball 5 times *2 practice catches and re-teaching as needed script: Catch the ball with one hand when I throw it to you. Ready?

throwing ball at the target- overhand

item of upper limb coordination *place the target on the wall at appropriate level with the bottom of target at examinee's eye level* *child should stand just behind end line facing the target! *child should use preferred hand to throw, either overhead or with modified sidearm motion *one practice throw *re-teach if necessary *Throw the ball at the target 5 times and make sure if they take a step their feet are still behind the line script: Throw the ball at the target. Ready? Begin.

rolling ball at target underhand

Ready? Begin.

dribbling the ball- one hand

item of upper limb coordination - child holds the tennis ball in preferred hand and extends their arm in front of their body so the ball is at shoulder height - then drop the ball and use preferred hand for each dribble, moving if necessary *record number of CONSECUTIVE dribbles up to 10 *dribble is incorrect if using other hand, bounces more than once or is caught teaching: use the preferred hand only to dribble, move as needed to dribble the ball, and dribble the ball until told to stop *2 practice dribbles allowed, and if necessary reteach before administering the test trial script: dribble the ball with one hand until I tell you to stop. Ready? Begin. *after 10 consecutive correct dribbles or an incorrect dribble say stop!*

dropping and catching the ball-one hand

Child should drop the ball and catch it with their preferred hand INCORRECT IF: they use their body, use both hands, or use non preferred hand teaching: use preferred hand only to drop the ball, and then use preferred hand only to catch the ball, drop the ball without using any additional force, move as needed to catch the ball, attempt to catch the ball 5 times! *2 practice attempts* script: Drop and catch the ball with the same hand. Ready? Begin. *if necessary, reteach between attempts*

dribbling the ball- alternating hands

item of upper limb coordination *child holds the tennis ball in preferred hand and extends preferred arm in front of their body so that the ball is approximately at shoulder height, child should drop the ball and ALTERNATE hands with each dribble, moving if necessary! *scored dribbles must be consecutive Teaching: Change hands with each dribble, move as needed to dribble the ball, and dribble until I tell you to stop! *2 practice attempts of dribbles while alternating hands is allowed* and if necessary reteach the task before administering test trial script: Dribble the ball, changing hands with each dribble until I tell you to stop. Ready? Begin. *after 10 consecutive dribbles or an incorrect dribble, say stop!
