Depth of Field

-shallow focus: not all images in the scene are sharp (small DOF) -deep focus: entire image is sharp and focused (large DOF)

Mise-en-scene

all elements that appear within the shot; if its on the screen and is a physical object recorded by the camera, then its a part of the mise-en-scene

Hand-held shot

camera is held in hand

Dolly/Tracking Shot

camera is mounted on a dolly and pushed on rails while shot is taken

Rack Focus/Focus Pull

change focus during one shot; to change emphasis on subjects; direct viewers to focus on another aspect of the scene

Two-Shot

est relationship; shows interactions; introduction of subjects equally

Rule of Thirds

frame w 2 horizontal and 2 vertical lines; point of intersection are points of interest

Pan

horizontal moving of the camera/scene

Extreme Long Shot

main subject is not clearly visible; convey relative sizing and setting

Master Shot/Long Take

recording an entire scene from start to end

Establishing shot

set up context for scene; setting time, relationship, and context w/o explicitly saying it

Aerial

shot from above, looking down

Low Angle

shot from below; to show power, dominance, ethereal nature (when paired w high key lighting)

Crane

shot taken by cameras on a crane

POV Shots

showing from the subject's perspective

High Angle

shows subject from above; used to show weakness, vulnerability of subject

Extreme Close Up

specific subject fills frame; extreme detail

Steady cam

taken using hydraulic harness; minimize jerkiness

Lead Room

the space in front of where the characters are looking

Dutch Angle

tilted to one side to create off-kilter image; stylistic look; convey homemade look; shows madness, fantasy, confusion, etc

Close Up

usually above shoulder; establish greater intimacy w viewers; greater details and specific features of the subject

Tilt

vertical movement of camera

Mid/Medium Shot

waist up; see more background; greater movement of subject; gesturing and emotions visible

reverse zooming

when camera is moving in opposite direction of the zoom

Over the Shoulder Shot

1/3 rd of person is shown in the shot; est POV, relationship and conversation
