What is the religious meaning of Jesus' suffering and death on the cross?

it was a part of God's plan for our salvation and allowed us to be saved from sin and death

List and explain three metaphors used in the New Testament that illustrate how Jesus frees us from sin.

- The metaphor of Jesus as the suffering servant compares Jesus to a servant of God who suffers to save others from their sins. - The metaphor of Jesus as the pascal lamb compares Jesus to the lambs that the Israelites killed during Passover while in slavery in Egypt. They used the blood of these lambs to mark their doorposts to protect themselves from the plague and be able to be freed from slavery, which is similar to how Jesus' death allows us to be freed from sin. - the metaphor of Jesus as a ransom for many, Jesus is compared to a ransom because his death is like a ransom to God for our freedom from sin and death.

List in detail three important things we know because of​ Jesus' Resurrection.

-Jesus is the Son of God and he was both human and divine -the rest of his teachings were true -death is not the end because we will have eternal life after death

Describe Jesus' Ascension and what it means for all of​ humanity.

-Jesus' Ascension is when Jesus left the earth and ascended into Heaven to be with his Father. -Jesus' Ascension means that all of humanity has the opportunity to spend eternal life with God in Heaven and allows Jesus to be with everyone at all times because he no longer is limited to being in one place at one time.

Define the term Paschal Mystery and tell in your own words what it means for Christians today.

-The Paschal Mystery is the mystery of Jesus' suffering and death giving us the ability to have eternal life -This mystery tells us that if we have faith in God during hard times in our lives, then we can get through them with his help.

List three things the four Gospels have in common in their accounts of Jesus' Resurrection.

-all three Gospels include that the women disciples and then the men discovered go to Jesus' tomb and find that Jesus' body is not there -an angel appears to the women disciples and tells them that Jesus is alive and will reveal himself to the disciples soon -Jesus appears to groups of the disciples to wish them peace -Jesus gives the disciples the responsibility of continuing his mission

What do we know about the resurrected body?

-could appear and disappear suddenly -the disciples knew that he was not a ghost because he ate with them and could be touched -People who knew him do not recognize him at first because of some differences, but he is still the same person that he was before when they do recognize them -being in his presence gives his disciples peace and hope. -Jesus was transformed by the Resurrection and was not just a reanimated corpse.

List some differences between the four Gospels' accounts of Jesus' Resurrection.

-they have different stories about what happened after Jesus Resurrected and who he appeared to -different amounts of information about Jesus' Ascension

because the Jewish leaders convinced them that Jesus was the potential leader of a rebellion against the Roman Empire

because they believed that Jesus challenged their authority (by bringing his mission to Jerusalem) and would lead the people to rebel against them and their teachings

What evidence is there for Jesus' Resurrection? Describe several arguments.

-we can trust that the historical events in the New Testament are true because we have found copies of it that trace back to the time of Jesus and multiple copies of the New Testament have been found in different locations -the Resurrection is a consistent belief in the Church and is found in the Gospels, the letters of Saint Paul, and the Acts of the Apostles -Jesus' empty tomb is also evidence for his Resurrection because the Roman and Jewish leaders could not find evidence that Jesus' body was stolen -Jesus' appearances after his Resurrection gave his followers the courage to carry out his mission after they had been discouraging and afraid.

Describe the events of Jesus' Passion.

-went through a mock trial -condemned to death - scourged -had to carry his cross to the place where he would be crucified -stripped of his clothes and nailed to the cross, where he died six hours later.

What does the suffering servant passage in Isaiah describe?

A servant of the Lord who suffers greatly to save people from their sins
