Puritans
A religious group of English Protestants who settled The Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Anne Hutchinson
An intelligent and talkative woman who had 14 children and challenged Puritan beliefs. She said that if you were destined to go to heaven then you do not need to live a holy life or follow laws, further claiming that this was a revelation from God. She was banished from Massachusetts Bay, in which she escaped to Rhode Island and then to New York, where she and all but one of her family was killed by Indians.
Why did the Puritans settle the MA Bay colony?
The Puritans settled the MA Bay colony for economic and religious reasons. They left England to settle in the MA Bay colony because the land was very cheap there.
John Winthrop
The first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, a successful attorney, and owned a large house in England. He took the job because he said it was a calling from God to create a holy society as a model for humankind . He was governor for 19 years, in which he helped the Bay Colony in fur trading, fishing, and shipbuilding during this time.
What was the purpose of the town meeting?
The purpose of the town meeting was from the Puritans to speak what was on their minds. This was the place to discuss any issues or problems that the individual might be having.
How did the settlement affect the Native Americans?
The settlement affected the Native Americans because there were even more Englanders taking their land. Metacom tried to stop them and he was killed. After that, the Native Americans lives changed drastically because anyone who had helped Metacom was sold as a slave to a foreign country.
General Court
This was the general representative assembly for the Massachusetts Bay Colony where only male members of the Congregational Church were allowed to vote for the General Court. This was an attempt at a democratic system in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, which ended being undemocratic for the non-elects
Why did Thomas Hooker leave the MA Bay colony?
Thomas Hooker left the MA Bay colony because he thought that the government had to much control. He then traveled along the Connecticut River. He soon stopped and named the area he was in Connecticut.

Roger Williams
He wanted his fellow clergymen to make a clean break from the Church of England and supported the Indians' claim to the land. He challenged the legality of the Bay Colony's charter and defied the authority of the government. He was put to trial and banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. After being kicked out of Massachusetts, he went on to form Rhode Island in, which was one of the most liberal, religiously tolerant, and advanced places.
