B. The number of protons it contains

Which of the following provides a definition of homeostasis? A. The means by which living things respond to stimuli B. The state of internal balance maintained by all living things C. The way in which living organisms get rid of their waste products D. The smallest structural unit of an organism capable of working independently

B. The state of internal balance maintained by all living things

A substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical changes is known as which of the following? A. A compound B. A mixture C. An atom D. An element

D. An element

Which of the following serves as the definition of acceleration? A. The speed of an object B. The changes in velocity of an object C. The direction in which an object is traveling D. The distance an object travels in a given unit of time

B. The changes in velocity of an object

Plants and animals are both types of living things. They share some similarities but they are also different in many ways. In a paragraph, discuss at least five differences between plants and animals.

1. Animals must eat other organisms for food 2. Animals reproduce sexually 3. Animals can move around their environment freely 4. Animals adapt and depend on their environment 5. Animals cannot produce their own energy

A nail accidentally dropped by a blacksmith two hundred years ago is discovered by an archaeologist. She observes the surface of the nail and writes in her notes, "One nail, probably iron." In at least three sentences, discuss whether a physical or chemical change has occurred, and provide information to support your conclusion.

A chemical change because this change occurs when a change results in substances that differ from the original substance. Iron molecules reacted with oxygen molecules to make a new compound or rust.

In a paragraph, describe the three states of matter, and how matter converts from one state to another.

A solid has a defined shaped because the molecules are arranged in a pattern and vibrate. If heat is applied to a solid the molecules begin to vibrate so fast they break apart and it turns into a liquid. If we add more heat to the liquid the molecule move fast enough to escape the surface and enter the air known as a gas.

Which of the following is a characteristic of Fungi? A. Gains nutrition by absorbing nutrients from surroundings B. Only reproduces sexually C. Stores energy as starch D. Is solely multicelled

A. Gains nutrition by absorbing nutrients from surroundings

Which of the following accurately defines atoms? A. Parts of a molecule B. Heavy particles having no electrical charge C. Heavy particles having a positive electrical charge D. Substances that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical changes

A. Parts of a molecule

Considering just the classification system presented in this chapter, into which of the Kingdoms would you place moss? A. Plantae B. Fungi C. Protista D. Bacteria

A. Plantae

The distance an object travels in a given unit of time is known as which of the following? A. Speed B. Velocity C. Motion D. Force

A. Speed

In at least a paragraph, describe thoroughly, using examples, the difference between elements, compounds, and mixtures

An element is a substance that cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical changes such as hydrogen. Through chemical changes elements can be combined into compounds such as table salt or sodium chloride. Not all combinations of elements form compounds. Any combination of material that can Socrates from one another is known as a mixture, for example the air we breathe is a mixture.

Which of the following is a characteristic of a plant? A. Can move freely B. Can produce food internally C. Possesses excretory organs D. Responds quickly to environmental changes

B. Can produce food internally

Describe in a paragraph the significant differences between birds and mammals

Birds have feathers covering their bodies while mammals have hair. Birds have beaks to cut up their food while mammals have teeth to help eat their food. Birds lay eggs with hard shells while only some mammals lay eggs with soft shells. Birds feed their young the food they eat while mammals feed their young milk.

Which of the following would not be classified as a mammal? A. Seal B. Mouse C. Chicken D. Bat

C. Chicken

Which of the following organelles found in cells is considered to be the packing material of the cell? A. Nucleus B. Cell Membrane C. Cytoplasm D. Mitochondria

C. Cytoplasm

Which of the following is a correct statement? A. If you cook an egg you have caused a physical change. B. A piece of iron rusting is an example of a physical change. C. Liquid water changing to solid water is an example of a physical change. D. If you observe a roasting marshmallow turn brown and black, you are observing a physical change

C. Liquid water changing to solid water is an example of a physical change.

Which of the following is not a component of the law of conservation of matter? A. Matter cannot be created B. Matter cannot be destroyed C. Matter is made of atoms D. Matter can change its form

C. Matter is made of atoms

Drag has the effect of increasing thrust C. The shape of the wings and the manipulation of ailerons both contribute to lift D. The air pressure above the wing's surface is more than the air pressure below the wing's surface

C. The shape of the wings and the manipulation of ailerons both contribute to lift

Which of the following is not a result of natural selection? A. The coloration of a deer mouse in Nebraska B. Gray tree frogs living in a wooded habitat in the north C. Variations such as brown fur color D. Giraffes with long necks

C. Variations such as brown fur color.

Which of the following is most closely related to Newton's first law of motion? A. Physical changes always precede chemical changes. B. If you cause a mass to accelerate, you are not changing its velocity. C. The force of attraction between two masses does not depend on the distance between them. D. If we apply a force to an object that is at rest, the object will apply an equal and opposite force.
