Chapter 1 - What is Simulation?
Can spreadsheets be used for simulation...?
Yes, usually used for static models and *very simple* dynamic models
Simulation (technical definition)
a logical and mathematical approach to building a model for design, experimentation, and implementation of a real-world process or a problem.
What modeling structure does Arena use?
Hierarchical Structure - multiple levels of modeling - start high then go deeper as needed
Common mistake with modeling unflexibly
"Looking where the light is" Only studying what is in direct line of visibility, even if that is not where the solution is likely located
Most Operational Models will be represented as:
1) Dynamic - time has a role 2) Discrete-change - state can only change as specific points (events) in time 3) Stochastic - uncertainty/randomness exists
Simulation is used to do what?
1) Model complex systems 2) Evaluate multiple possible outcomes 3) Make forecasts 4) Determine critical values 5) Monitor elements and components of a system and their status
System (definition)
A collection of items, things, and resources that are gathered and focused towards specific goals and objectives. (Objectives can be addresses by subsystems)
Types of Models
Physical = Ionic Math = Abstract Graphic = Visual Simulation = Forecast
RIRO
Random Input Random Output This comes from stochastic simulations
Simulation (vague definition)
methods and applications to imitate or mimic real systems, usually via computer
Model validity
the extent to which a concept, conclusion or measurement is well-founded and likely *corresponds accurately* to the real world based on probability. Can test by running simulation to produce current data
Model (definition)
set of assumptions/approximations about how system works
