Chapter 18 Basic Sentence Parts
Indirect Object
A noun or pronoun that comes after an action verb and before a direct object. It names the person or thing to which something is given or for which something is done.
Direct Object
A noun or pronoun that receives the action of a verb.
Subject Complement
A noun, pronoun, or adjective that follows a linking verb that provides important details about the subject.
Complete Subject
Consists of the subject and any words related to it.
Complete Predicate
Consists of the verb and any words related to it.
Compound Subject Complement
Consists of two or more predicate nouns, pronouns, or adjectives joined by a conjunction such as and or or.
Complete Sentence
Contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought.
Action Verb Complements
Direct Objects and Indirect Objects
Predicate Adjective
Follows a linking verb and describes the subject of the sentence.
Predicate noun, Predicate Pronoun
Follows a linking verb and renames or identifies the subject of the sentence.
Adverb
Modifies a verb and answers one of the following questions: How something happened, Where something happened, When Something Happened, or To What Extent Something Happened
Difficult to find subject: Questions
Often in inverted word order. Strategy to solve: Rewrite the question into a statement that BEGINS with the subject followed by the verb.
Object of the Preposition
The noun or pronoun that follows the preposition. Prepositional Phrase = Preposition + Noun/Pronoun
Difficult to find subject: Commands or Requests
The subject is ALWAYS implied "You".
Subject of a Sentence
The word or group of words that names the person, place, thing, or idea that performs the action or is described. It answers the question Who? or What? before the verb.
Difficult to find subject: Sentences beginning with here or there
"____" or "____" are NEVER the subject of a sentence. Often the sentence is inverted word order. Re-order the sentence into normal word order.
Complement
A word or group of words that completes the meaning of a sentence.
Linking Verb Complements
Predicate Nouns, Predicate Pronouns, Predicate Adjectives
Normal Word Order
Subject followed by the verb.
Verb
Tells what the subject does, what is done to the subject, or what the condition of the subject is.
Compound Subject
Two or more subjects that have the same verb and are joined by a conjunction such as and or or.
Compound Verb
Two or more verbs that have the same subject and are joined by a conjunction such as and or or.
Inverted Word Order
Verb followed by subject.
