Charles I wanted a Parliament in order to get money, and when they denied to give him money he started taking from the people. This made the Parliament angry and they launched a Petition to get the full rights of the people back. Charles I refused this Petition and insisted he could rule without a Parliament.

James II

the brother of Charles II who became the king of England and head of Chruch of England in 1685 and he tried to reimpose Romanism on Enlgand for the next three years

National Covenant

the covenant established by the Scottish people in 1683 to resist any attempt to change their religious institutions without their consent

Petition of Right

the document Parliament drew up in 1628, it reaffirmed the liberties and rights which Englishmen had won in the past

Whigs

the group that arose in Parliament to oppose Charles as he became pro-Catholic

William Laud

archbishop of Canterbury appointed by King Charles to tighten the rules on the Anglican church to make it more like the Roman church
