List three vehicle-contributed risk factors.

bald tires, dirty windshield, broken headlights, worn wiper blades

Evaluate your 4-6 second range before entering that space

.

What does it mean to execute?

Carry out your decision in order to avoid conflict

List 3 driver-contributed risk factors

Combing hair, cell phone, eating or drinking

What are the important actions you might need to execute when you are in the last phase of the IPDE Process?

Control speed, Steer, Communicate

Name four things you should search when driving in the city

Search for intersections, Parked cars, Pedestrians, Traffic

When you are predicting in the IPDE Process, use knowledge, judgement, and experience to predict what?

You predict where possible points of conflict could occur

Left turn hand signal

hand and arm straight out

Right turn hand signal

hand and arm upward

Look ahead to evaluate a 12-15 second range

.

The book states you should signal 5 seconds before you turn

.

The Zone Control System has how many zones that surround your vehicle?

6

What is a closed zone?

A space not open to you because of a restriction in your line of sight or intended path of travel

What is an open zone?

space where you can drive without a restriction to your line of sight or to your intended path of travel

Uphill against a curb?

toward traffic

Explain how using an orderly search pattern helps you to be a safe driver?

An orderly visual search pattern helps develop the identifying process in the IPDE process. It helps you search critical areas frequently, making you a better, safer driver.

When you decide in the IPDE Process, your decision will probably be one of three. What are the three?

Change speed, change direction, communicate

What effect does the curvature of a mirror have on image size and your perception of its distance from your vehicle?

Convex mirrors allow a wider view of behind and to the side of the car.

At the top of page 84 there is a good example of an orderly visual search pattern. What is it?

Each look or glance should only last an Instant as you evaluate your zones and the areas to the left and right

Explain how communication and deciding to change speed or direction help you to be a low-risk driver.

It is important to decide these things first before actually doing them so that you can assess the road and drivers around you to make a good and safe decision.

Why is it important to predict as you drive?

It is important to predict while you drive because it helps you be a safer, cautious driver and avoid possible accidents.

What does it mean when you can see something in the convex mirror attached to an outside mirror but not in the flat mirror?

It means that the object is in your blind spot.

Explain how zones around your car helps support your ability to identify and predict?

Knowing the zones around your car helps your identify and predict because you will be constantly checking the most important zones and by categorizing these zones you can remember more of the predictions that align with the spaces.

Explain how lane positioning is used before and after making a lane change

Lane positioning is used before making a lane change to check behind you for other cars and to see if it is safe to change.

slow or stop hand signal

Left hand and arm pointing down

When backing straight, your right hand should be behind your front passenger seat. Where should your left hand be?

Left- 12 o'clock Right- Over back of passenger seat

On open highways, you need to search much further ahead. Name three things you should look for

Look for crossroads. Slow-moving vehicles, Animals

What factors can cause the IPDE Process to take more time?

The IPDE process takes time because you have to have time to identify clues, predict events, and the more complex traffic situations are, the more time it will take to evaluate all that is going on to carry out the IPDE process.

Why is reverse-angle parking safer than angle parking?

Reverse-angle parking is safer than angle parking because you wont have to back out into traffic.

Explain selective seeing and why it's important for drivers

Selective seeing helps to weed out the things ahead of you when driving that do not help you. It is the identification of clues and events that may restrict your line of sight or intended path. It is important and helpful to develop selective seeing because it helps you pick out the most important aspects of the road ahead of you, making the IPDE process smoother and quicker.

Explain what is meant by selective use of the IPDE Process

Selective use of IPDE means that you do not need to always use this process because things on the road are constantly changing.

What is the safest way to perform a turnabout

The safest way to perform a turnabout is to position your car at the very right of the road, check everywhere around your car and turn on your left turn signal. Then, make a sharp left and stop before the left curb, again make sure no cars were coming before doing so and do this quickly. Then, check again for traffic and reverse the car turning sharply again and back out slowly. Finally, check again for traffic and go into the lane you were turning around to go to.

Explain how and when braking and acceleration actions should take place when making a moving right turn

The steps to take when making a moving right turn is first, make sure your car is in the correct lane appropriate for a right turn. Then, begin braking. Next, look around for other cars and people. Then, Slow down to 10 mph right before the crosswalk. Then, check the left again, look back ahead, and begin turning. When you're turning, make sure to turn into the nearest lane and begin accelerating.

List the three actions you can execute to avoid conflict and explain how these actions help you prevent conflicts

The three important actions to execute are controlling sped, steering, and communication. These actions help to avoid conflict and prevent conflict because they are the prime components of driving safety, our speed affects our safety, steering straight and being prepared to change is important, and communicating with drivers around you is very important.

list the three basic types of parking methods

The three types of basic parking are perpendicular parking, angle parking, and parallel parking.

Describe three risks posed by drivers, vehicles, and the roadway and environment. What actions could you take to reduce the risks posed by these factors?

The three types of risk factors are driver-contributed factors, such as messing with the radio or aux, using your phone, and eating or drinking, vehicle-contributed factors which include bad maintenance on your car, and roadway-and environment-contributed factors such as ice, sharp curves, or snow. To reduce the risk of these factors you should follow the IPDE process which stands for identify, predict, decide, and execute.

Avoid locking the brakes in an emergency stop. Why do locked brakes make steering impossible?

They make it impossible because the wheels must be turning to provide traction for steering.

Explain why street-side angle parking is the most dangerous parking method

This is dangerous because when you back out you will be backing into traffic!

Downhill against a curb?

Toward the hill

uphill/downhill without curb

Turn wheels to the right

How should the tires be turned when parked uphill with a curb?

When parking uphill, the car tires should be turned to the left, so that the car would roll into the curb.

Sometimes hazards cannot be minimized or separated. When this occurs, you must decide to compromise space. When you compromise what are you doing?

You are giving as much space as possible to the greater hazard

Describe three situations where you would use each of the three lane positions

You should generally be positioned in the lane 1 positioning because it is the safest because it is in the middle of the lane. Lane position 2 should be used when there is something on the right side of the road that you want to give more space or avoid. Lane position 3 should be used when you want to get away from something on the left.

What outside checks should you make before backing any vehicle?

You should turn around to see the back and blindspots of the car before backing up.

List three environment-contributed risk factors

bright sun, dark shadows, glare

When backing left or right, have both hands on the wheel. you need to check the rear, but also check the ___________ of the front of the vehicle.

four corners
