Texture

Used to describe the surface character of woven fabrics and other materials as experienced primarily through the sense of touch

Impasto

A layer of thickly applied pigment

Invented texture

A version of visual texture that makes no reference to visible reality

Actual texture

ACTUALLY related to the materials used to create the work; tactile-physical; rough, sharp, smooth.

Impasto

Most common painting technique that yields actual texture.

Subversive texture

Often both intriguing and repellent, provoking an approach-avoidance conflict in the viewer

Visual texture

The illusion of an actual texture

Goal of visual texture

To simulate the look and feel of actual surfaces and textures.

To subvert or undermine our expectations of the familiar and fixed notions of reality.
