Chapter 6 - Periosteum and Endosteum
Functions of periosteum
1. Isolates bone from surrounding tissue 2 Route for blood vessels and nerves for the bone 3. Helps in growth and repair
Two membrane layers of periosteum
1. Outer fibrous layer 2. Inner osteogenic layer (composed of bone cells)
Endosteum
Delicate membrane covers internal surfaces of bone Has osteoprogenitor cells and osteoclasts
Periosteum
Double layer of membrane that covers bones Becomes continuous with other connective tissue (joint capsule, tendons, ligaments)
Functions of endosteum
Functions in growth, repair, and remodeling
Sharpey's fibers
anchor periosteum to bone
