Patriot Army formed in 1775 by the Second Continental Congress and led by General George Washington

Battle of Sullivan's Island

1776- The British were sent to SC to scare the colonists and attempted to destroy Sullivan's Island in Charleston Harbor. Their ships got stuck in the sandbanks and the colonists fired at them. The British left in damaged and destroyed ships, humiliated. (Later called Fort Moultrie after General Moultrie, who created the flag of South Carolina here)

Battle of Kings Mountain

1780- Patriot (mountain men) vs. British and American Loyalists. Patriots won through guerilla warfare. Switched the momentum from the British to the Americans in the South.

Battle of Camden

1780- a major British victory in the South, where general Horatio Gates' untrained and tired militiamen were no match for General Lord Cornwallis' army.

Battle of Cowpens

1781- An overwhelming victory by American Revolutionary forces under Brigadier General Daniel Morgan, in the Southern campaign of the American Revolutionary War.

Battle of Eutaw Springs

1781- Last major battle of the revolution fought in SC General Greene with 2,00 men looked like victory until they began looting instead of fighting allowing the British to regroup 600 British killed, wounded, or missing Patriots- 500 killed, missing, or wounded, some went home

Treaty of Ninety Six

A pledge from Upcountry Loyalists to remain neutral in the Revolutionary War

Articles of Confederation

A weak constitution that governed America during the Revolutionary War.

Dewitt's Corner

After Cherokee War, Chief Attakullakulla (Cherokee) signed a treaty with South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, and Virginia giving up their land in South Carolina, basically the land in present-day Greenville, Anderson, Oconee, and Pickens Counties

Olive Branch Petition

An offer of peace sent by the Second Continental Congress to King George lll

Constitution of 1778

The new government of South Carolina written after the colonies declared independence, this made sure the government would be controlled by the Lowcountry elite (men of privilege), mainly Charles Town merchants, planters, and lawyers.
