In chapter 7, why does Ackley not want to play canasta?
Ackley says that it is late, and he has to get up early to go to Mass. ""Do you know what time it is by any chance? Listen. I gotta get up and go to Mass in the morning."
In chapter 5, who was Allie and how did he die?
Allie was Holden's younger brother who died of leukemia. "My brother Allie had this left handed fielder's mitt. He got leukemia and died when we were up in Maine, on July 18, 1946."
In chapter 1, why didn't Holden attend the big football game?
He didn't attend because he had just gotten back from New York with the fencing team and because he wanted to say good bye to his history teacher.
In chapter 2, why does Holden talk about the ducks and what do they symbolize?
He does this because he was thinking about the lagoon in Central Park and how when it got frozen where did the ducks go. The ducks symbolize adapting. "I was wondering if it would be frozen over when I got home, and if it was, where did the ducks go."
In chapter 5, why was Holden almost psychoanalyzed?
He had broken all the windows in the garage because he was mad that his brother had died. "I was only thirteen, and they were going to have me psychoanalyzed and all, because I broke all the windows in the garage."
In chapter 1, who is D.B and where does he live?
He is Holden's brother and he lives in Hollywood. "I mean that's all I D.B about, and he's my brother and all. He's in Hollywood.
In chapter 6, why does Holden constantly look out the window?
He likes to be an outsider looking in, he thinks a lot about and is angry at the world. "I probably was still looking out the window, but I swear I can't remember."
In chapter 3, why does Holden not like Ackley?
He would do things that annoyed Holden, such as picking up his things and frequently asking him questions. "He always picked up your personal stuff and looked at it. Boy, could he get on your nerves sometimes."
In chapter 4, why was Holden very nervous of Jane and Stradlater going on a date?
Holden already knew what Stradlater was capable of and worries and cares about Jane. "It made me so nervous I nearly went crazy. I already told you what a sexy bastard Stradlater was."
In chapter 6, why does Holden start a fight with Stradlater?
Holden fought Stradlater because he was mad at him and he hates everything about him, because he pictures Stradlater as everything that he hates about the world, he's jealous, so he dislikes him. "You don't even know if her first name is Jane or Jean ya goddang moron!"
In chapter 8, what excuse does Holden give to Mrs. Morrow for not being able to visit Ernest in the summer?
Holden tells her that he will be going to South America with his grandmother in the summer. "I just thanked her and told her I was going to South America with my grandmother."

Holden thinks about Jane and whether she was able to resist the allures of Stradlater. "I just kept laying there on Ely's bed, thinking about Jane and all."

Robert Ackley is a senior that roomed next to Holden. "It was Robert Ackley, this guy that roomed right next to me."
In chapter 4, what does Stradlater's razor symbolize?
Stradlater's razor symbolizes the actual slob that Stradlater is, because he would keep himself very clean, but he would leave the razor very dirty. "He never cleaned it or anything. He always looked good when he was finished fixing himself up, but he was a secret slob anyway."
In chapter 2, what were the names of two other schools that Holden went to?
The schools were called Whooton School and at Elkton Hills. "If I'm not mistaken, I believe you also had some difficulty at the Whooten School and at Elkton Hills."
