Cycloalkanes are alkanes that are bound together in a cyclic form. When naming cycloalkanes in IUPAC nomenclature, the cyclic portion of the molecule determines the name of the molecule. Cycloalkanes are named like alkanes, except the prefix cyclo is added as part of the name of the molecule. Therefore, a cycloalkane containing three carbon atoms would have the following IUPAC name: cyclopropane. If a cycloalkane contains substituents, each substituent should be labeled by its location in the ring and named either as an alkyl group (carbon branch) or a halo group (halogen atom), with a hyphen in between the number and the name. However, if a cycloalkane contains only one substituent, the location of the substituent is not needed in the nomenclature. If a cycloalkane contains more than one substituent, the substituents should be numbered to give the lowest numbers to all the substituents. Part A Part complete What is the IUPAC name for the molecule shown?
pentylcyclohexane
What substituent is attached to the parent chain?
propyl
