china's one child policy
penalties if not followed
- Fines between (£750-£800) - They were cut off from supply from government (no rice rations) and live stock was taken - Forced/ pressured into abortion at any time in pregnancy (granny police) -Discrimination at work ( looked at differently)
Aims of the one child policy
- To reduce poverty and improve quality of life - To be able to support their whole population with foo and education
How was this encouraged to work?
- only children were prioritized with access to housing, schools and health services of their chose -Free birth control - If you only had one child you were given a bonus -They would offer money to people if they were aloud to make them infertile through sterilization
problems and unintended consequences
-little emperor syndrome- parents spoil there children bringing up obese, demanding , spoilt boys. - caused them to have an aging population(people to live longer) - there weren't enough young people to support the aging population(old) meaning they had to invest in social retirement plans - caused a gender imbalance with a ratio of 116 males: 100 females
successes of this policy
-the population growth rates fell, with around 250-300 million births prevented. - pressure on services have been reduced e.g. housing, health care, education and law enforcement) -life expectancy has doubled and school grades have increased.
Future problems
-women outnumbered by 60 million men which meant young men could not find wives -caused a 4-2-1 method (as an only child grows up they will have to support two parents, four grandparents) this is why if only children marry they are allowed 2 children of their own. -this policy wont begin to decrease until 2036 because there are still 6 million births per year
How have they controlled population growth?
By enforcing the one child policy( couples can only have one child)
what is the population of china
worlds largest population at 1331 billion in 2009 (20% of worlds population)
