Constitution
How long did the Founding Fathers think the Constitution would last? 10 years. Explain the basic framework of the Constitution. Three branches of government (L, E, J); divided into sections called Articles. What were some of the conflicts that arose while writing the Constitution? How were these conflicts resolved? Representation in congress: bicameral legislature ("Great Compromise"); Slavery: 3/5 compromise; Voting: electoral college.
Articles of Confederation
What type of government did the A.O.C. create? List specifics. The first government of the United States; a weak central government with only a one house legislature made up of 1 representative per state (13 total). What were some of the problems/complaints about the A.O.C.? No ability to tax; no executive or judiciary to carry out or enforce the laws; a military but no way to fund it; no national unity; states did not have to obey other states laws or treat other states' citizens equally.
Constitutional Convention
When and where did the Constitutional Convention occur? 1787; Philadelphia. Why was the Constitutional Convention convened? To "fix" the Articles of Confederation. What happened at the Constitutional Convention? The delegates threw out the Articles and decided to write a new Constitution.
