CK-12 Biology Chapter 3
According to cell theory, all organisms are made up of what?
cells
What are some ways things move in and out of the cell?
diffusion, osmosis, active transport and passive transport
What is cytoplasm?
everything that is inside the plasma membrane
What does philic mean
liking
What does phobic mean
not liking
Where are proteins formed?
ribosomes
What are ribosomes?
the place in the cytoplasm where proteins are made
What is osmosis?
A special kind of diffusion, the higher concentration is still spreading to the lower concentration - but it has to pass a membrane in order to get there
What is the difference between active transport and passive transport?
Active transport requires energy
According to the cell theory, how many life functions occur within cells?
All of the life functions
According to the cell theory, where do all cells come from?
Already existing cells
What does a nucleus hold?
DNA
What type of cell has a nucleus?
Eukaryotic
What does the cytoskeleton do?
Helps the cell holds its shape
What instructions does the DNA carry?
Instructions for making protein in the cells
Cells have different shapes. What for?
It helps them with their different jobs
What is a plasma membrane?
It is a thin coat that surrounds the cell
What does the cell membrane do?
It protects the cell! It also lets some things in, and keeps some things out
What three things does the cytoplasm do?
It pushes against the plasma membrane to hold it in place. It holds the cell organelles. It provides a place for things to happen inside the cell.
How is the golgi apparatus like a post office?
It receives things, packages and labels them, then sends them on
What is homeostasis?
It's like reacting to changes, and trying to keep things the same. Like your own personal thermostat!
What is the plasma membrane filled with?
Jelly like cytoplasm
What is cell transport?
Moving things in and out of the cell
Which kind of cell has long tendrils that reach out?
Nerve cell
What are the systems that help the body keep its "thermostat" the same (homeostasis)?
Nervous, Endocrine, Digestive, Excretory, Musculoskeletal, and Immune systems
Do all cells have the same shape?
No
What is the control center of the cell?
Nucleus
What are the parts that all cells have in common?
Plasma membrane, cytoplasm, ribosomes and DNA
What type of cell does not have a nucleus?
Prokaryotic
What is an example of diffusion?
Putting food coloring in a glass of water. The food coloring spreads out all throughout the glass
Who named the blob in the middle of a cell the "nucleus"?
Robert Brown
Who discovered cells in a cork?
Robert Hooke
Who discovered cells in a piece of cork?
Robert Hooke
Which three scientists developed the cell theory?
Schwann, Schleiden and Virchow
The microscope helps us see cells. How many years ago was it created?
350 years
Which part of the cell is like a barrier to the outside?
The cell membrane
All living cells have some things in common. What are they?
They obtain and use energy, respond to their environment, and reproduce
What are some things that cells do?
Use energy, respond to their environment, reproduce
What does hydro mean?
water
