Classify an organism as an autotroph or heterotroph based on a description or picture.

Autotroph: Producer, obtain energy from nonliving sources, photosynthesis and make simple sugars.Heterotroph: Consumer, obtain energy from living or once living organisms. The Rhino is Heterotroph. It gets energy from living or once-living organisms.

Explain the significance of detritivores (decomposers) in a food chain/food web.

Detritivores are decomposers that eat dead materials. They are significant because they are at the top of the food chain, they break down stuff.

Interpret a food chain or food web.

Food chains trace a single flow of energy and show trophic levels. Food webs show multiple food chains at once, and how they are interconnected.

Draw an example of an energy pyramid and explain how energy flows through each level. Label the trophic level, classify the type of organism and give an example of an organism at each level.

Grass-Grasshopper-Mouse-Eagle or Owl Producer, Primary, Secondary, Tertiary 1,2,3,4

Classify an organism depending on what type of consumer it is based on a description or diagram.

Herbivores- Vegetation Carnivores- Meat Omnivores- Vegetation and Meat Detritivores- Decomposed/dead materials

Explain the difference between how autotrophs and heterotrophs acquire energy.

Heterotrophs are consumers that obtain energy from living or once living organisms. Autotrophs obtain energy from nonliving sources and are producers.

Calculate the energy, number of organisms, or biomass lost between trophic levels.

Level 1: 100% | Producer Level 2: 10% | Primary Level 3: 1% | Secondary Level 4: 0.1% | Tertiary

Use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast photosynthesis and chemosynthesis.

Photosynthesis source of energy is Sunlight. Chemosynthesis source of energy is Chemicals. They both use non-living sources for energy.

Describe why the pyramid shape is used to represent energy, biomass, and numbers pyramids.

The pyramid shape is used because it can represent energy available at every trophic level. The level will always get smaller as you go up the pyramid. The pyramid shape is also used because it represents the number of organisms at each trophic level. Lastly, the biomass part of the pyramid represents the total mass of living organic matter at each trophic level.

Identify a trophic level based on a description or diagram.

Trophic Levels: Producer -> Primary -> Secondary -> Tertiary Grass -> Grasshopper -> Mouse -> Owl

Vocabulary: Producer/autotroph Consumer/heterotroph Detrivore Carnivore Omnivore Herbivore Chemosynthesis

Vocabulary: Producer/autotroph- Producers obtain energy from non living sources. They mostly capture energy from photosynthesis to make simple sugars. Examples include plants, algae, and bacteria. Consumer/heterotroph- Consumers obtain energy from living or once living organisms. Examples of consumers include animals, fungi, and people. Detrivore- Detritivores are decomposers that eat dead materials. Carnivore- Carnivores only eat meat. Omnivore- Omnivores only eat meat and vegetation. Herbivore- Herbivores only eat vegetation. Chemosynthesis- Chemosynthesis is chemical energy. It is sulfur rich salt marsh, examples include deep sea vent and bacteria.
