a birth that occurs earlier than 37 weeks of development.

a deviation from what is regarded as normal
Congenital Disorder
an abnormal condition that exists at the time of birth. Can be caused by a developmental disorder, prenatal influences, premature birth, or injuries during birth process.
Developmental Disorder (aka) birth defect
an anomaly or malformation such as the absence of a limb or the presence of an extra toe.
Atresia Ex. anal atresia is absence of opening at anus; pulmonary atresia is absence of a pulmonary valve
describes the congenital absence of a normal body opening or the failure of a structure to be tubular.

is the result of brain damage that can be caused by premature birth or inadequate oxygen to the brain during the birth process.
Ex. of problems caused by lack of adequate prenatal medical care.
premature delivery or a low birth-weight
Ex. of problem caused by behavior is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)
resulting condition of baby is physical & behavioral traits, including growth abnormalities, mental retardation, brain damage, and socialization difficulties.
