Drawing - Chapter 4 Review
Shade
A darker value of a hue, created by adding black or a darker complementary color to the original hue.
Tone
A less intense value of a hue, created by adding white to the original hue.
Tint
A lighter value of a hue, created by adding white to the original hue.
Complementary colors
Any two colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel.
Explain how to lessen the intensity of a color.
By adding black to produce shades, adding whites to produce tints, mixing any shade of gray with the hue, and mixing a color with its complementary color.
How do we perceive color?
Color is produced by the way our vision responds to different wavelengths of light. Light is reflected off objects which absorb different wavelengths and reflect others.
Color harmony
Combinations of color--such as complementary or analogous colors--that can be defined by their positions on the color wheel. Particular color harmonies may be used to achieve specific effects.
Name five types of color harmonies. List a set of colors as an example of each harmony.
Complementary colors: blue and orange or yellow-green and red-violet Analogous colors: yellow, yellow-orange, and orange Split complementary: blue with yellow-orange and red-orange Triadic harmony: blue-green, red-violet, and yellow-orange Monochromatic: blue, black, and white
Neutral
Having no easily seen hue. White, gray, and black are neutrals.
Primary colors
In subtractive color theory, such as when mixing pigments, the hues--red, yellow, and blue--from which all other colors are made.
Describe how paint is applied in pointillism. Which artists is known for developing pointillism painting technique?
Paint is applied to the canvas in small dots or dabs. Georges Seurat is known for pointillism.
Name the primary, secondary, and intermediate hues used in mixing pigments.
Red, yellow, and blue are the three primary hues. Violet, orange, and green are the secondary hues. Mixing a primary hue with a secondary hue is what is known as a intermediate hue.
How are the secondary colors created?
Secondary colors are created by mixing the pigments of any two primary colors.
What did Georgia O'Keeffe make the flowers in her paintings so large?
She wanted to magnify the flowers to startle the viewers.
Pigment
The coloring material used in making painting and drawing media, dyes, inks, and toners. Pigments may be natural (made from earth or plants) or made from laboratory-prepared chemicals.
What colors are not found in the light spectrum? What is the term for these colors?
The colors that are not found in the light spectrum are white, gray, and black. These colors are called neutrals.
Spectrum
The complete range of color that is present in white light. The spectrum colors are visible when light is refracted through a prism.
Hue
The name of a color, determined by its position in the spectrum.
Intensity
The strength, brightness, or purity of a color. Changing a color's value will also change its intensity.
To what does the term value refer in color mixing?
Value refers to the lightness and darkness of a color, or the quantity of light that a color reflects.
