Driver's Ed Chapter 5
What is the total stopping distance?
Distance your car travels while making a stop
Good Traction:
Dry, smooth road snow tires with snowy roadway Tires with deep wide tread on snowy road
What are the factors that affect your vehicle in a curve?
Sharpness of Curves, Banked Curves, Load
Automatic safety belts
Some vehicles have automatic safety belts for occupant protection. To use these belts, you must make sure your lap belt is buckled low and across your hips.
force of impact
The force with which a moving object hits another object
How does traction control your vehicle?
Traction makes it possible for your vehide to grip the road so you can change speed kd direction.
What are the factors affecting energy of motion?
When an object moves, it acquires energy. This force is called energy of motion, or kinetic energy. The faster your vehicle moves, the more energy of motion it has.
a safety belt a passenger must adjust
active restraint device
Which of the following is an example of supplemental restraint system?
airbag
restraint device that you have to engage
automatic after belts
a curve that is higher on the outside
banked curve
Check tire pressure when tires are __________________
c/old
point around which an object's weight is evenly distributed
center of gravity
To maintain high levels of traction, the road must be clean, dry, level, and __________
clean
Ice tends to form on bridges and __________
shaded areas
When an object moves it acquires
speed
Weight
The heavier a vehicle, the more damage it will cause in a collision.
Front and rear crush areas
Vehicles are now designed to have their front or rear end crush on impact.Whenthishappens, the dramatic force of impact is les- sened for occupants in the vehicle.
The force that pulls all things to earth is called ______________.
gravity
The ______________ your speed, the longer your breaking distance.
higher
The gripping ability of of a tire will ________________ as the amount of tread touching as the road increases.
increase
a restraint device, such as an airbag, that works automatically
passive restraint device
Some vehicles have supplemental restraint systems called ____________
passive restraints
The distance traveled while you identify your situation is _______________
perception distance
Your ______________ is the length of time it takes you to identify, predict and decide to slow for a hazard
perception time
PSI
pounds per square inch
The length of time you take to execute an an action is called your _______________ time.
reaction
Your ________________ is the distance your vehicle travels while you identify and react to a hazard
reaction distance
Your _________________ is the length of time you take to execute your action in response to a hazard after you identify it
reaction time
any part of a vehicle that holds an occupant in a collision is
restraint device
How should a driver and passengers position themselves to benefit from air bags?
- Sit away from an air bag after you are belted. As the driver, Your chest should be at least 10 inches away from the steering wheel hub, as shown in the right-hand picture on the opposite page. Use approved pedal extensions if needed to attain this distance. As a front-seat passenger, move your seat as far back as possible. - If you have a tilt steering wheel, tilt it so your air bag will deploy toward your chest.
What is the correct way to adjust safety belts?
1. Adjust your seat to a comfortable upright position. Make sure your safety belt is not twisted. 2. Snap the metal fitting on the end of the safety belt into the buckle. Then adjust the lap part of your safety belt so that it is low and snug across your hips. The bottom edge of the safety belt should just touch your thighs. By making this adjustment, any crash forces w i l l be applied to your pelvic bones. 3. Finally, adjust the shoulder part of your safety belt across your chest.
How can you check traction while driving?
1. Check your rear zone to make sure no traffic is near. 2. Brake gently to see how your vehicle responds. 3. If your vehicle does not slow or if your antilock brakes start to work, reduce speed even further.
In a ______________ situation, you must divide the amount of available between stopping or starting and steering
split traction
A vehicle's energy of motion will change in proportion to the __________________ of its change in speed.
square
What are three factors that will change your vehicles force of impact in a collision?
Speed, weight and distance between impact and stopping
How do you best position and use child safety belts?
The use of special seats for infants and small children is required in every state. These seats must be used in the back seat of your vehicle, as shown in the picture on page 103. If used in the front seat of a vehicle with air bags, an air bag could seriously injure a child in the event of a crash. Always follow your child seat manufacturer's instructions.
Two factors that work on your vehicle as you go around a curve are traction and ___________
energy of motion
when an object moves it uses kinetic energy which is called ____________
energy of motion
The gripping action that keeps tires from slipping
friction
What are four factors that affect breaking?
- Speed: The higher your speed, the longer your braking distance. - Vehicle Condition: A vehicle with worn tires, shock absorbers, or brakes needs a longer distance to stop. - Roadway Surface: Rain, snow, ice, dirt, wet leaves, and gravel reduce road traction and increase stopping distance. - Driver Ability: If you are distracted or impaired, you will take longer to stop your vehicle. - Antilock Braking System (ABS): If your car has an antilock braking system, you can better control your stopping distance while turning. - Hills Your braking distance increases when driving downhill. - Loads: Heavy loads increase your braking distance.
Most collisions occur at 40mph and _________ miles from home
25
What three things can reduce traction?
Bald tires, wet tires, under/overinflations
How do you use the four second rule?
Use the four-second rule, which enables you to projed your approximate stopping distance under ideal conditions at any speed. 1. Pick a fixed checkpoint (a mark or shadow on the road) ahead where you think you could stop. 2. Count off four seconds: "one- thousand-one, one-thousand- two, one-thousand-three, one- thousand-four.'' 3. Check your vehicle's position. If you have just reached your fixed checkpoint, you can assume the distance you estimated in Step 1 was the approximate distance it would have taken you to stop.
How does gravity affect your vehicle?
You can feel the pull of gravity as you drive up and down hills. When you drive uphill, you will lose speed unless you use extra power.
a bald tire might result in a ________ which is a sudden loss of air pressure in the tire
blowout
the distance your vehicle travels from the time you apply the breaks till it stops is _______________
breaking distance
distance your vehicle travels wnile you make a stop

force that keeps each tire from sliding on the road
traction

traction
Grooved surface of a tire that grips the roadway
tread
