Describe how you should position the driver's seat?

Your seat should be as far away from the steering wheel as possible, but still able to reach the pedals and other controls. Do not drive with your arms across the steering wheel.

Where should the lap belt be positioned on your body?

across your hips, not stomach/upper abdomen

What offers the best protection in frontal crashes?

airbags and seatbelts

What does the "BGR" stand for in BGR mirror settings?

blindspot glare reduction

If the child is at least 2 years old and up to 4 years old how should the child seat be installed?

front-facing

Why shouldn't you hold a young child in your lap?

illegal, whiplash, infant can get crushed by an airbag or by you

When a child turns 4 and up to at least age 8 they must ride in what type of child seat? Why?

in a booster seat so that the seat belt goes in the right places protecting them

Why shouldn't you back up using your rear-view mirror?

increases your blindspots

Putting in the ignition key and turning to the ON position allows the driver to:

operate electrical equipment

If a child is a newborn to 2 years old how should the child seat be installed?

rear-facing

What are the advantages of using BGR mirror settings?

smaller blindspots

List the other locations in a vehicle where airbags may be located

steering wheel , in front of the passenger seat, side of the car

Where are the traditional blind-spots located on a vehicle?

the back tires of your car

Which pedal is on the left side?

the break

What are hazard flashers used for?

to alert others to take caution

When may you want to use lower gears while driving?

when driving down hill

List 2 reasons you shouldn't use 10 and 2 for steering wheel hand positions.

your arms are in front of the airbag and your arms get tired

List 3 reasons you should use "hand-to-hand" steering.

your arms never go in front of the airbag, your arms don't get tired, your hands never leave the steering wheel

When you adjust the angle of the steering wheel the top of the wheel should align with what part of your body?

your chest, not face

Describe the Cross-traffic alert

- Assists the driver by monitoring the rear and side areas of the vehicle while reversing - This has a sensor that detects any moving objects behind the car

Describe the Forward collision warning system

- Helps you avoid hitting something that's in front of you - Makes beeps to warn you, if you do not slow down then the brakes are applied automatically

Describe the Electronic Stability control (ESP)

- Helps you with sharp curves. - a vehicle control system comprised of sensors and a microcomputer that continuously monitors how well a vehicle responds to a driver's steering input and selectively applies the vehicle brakes and modulates engine power to keep the vehicle traveling along the path indicated by the steering wheel position. This technology helps prevent the sideways skidding and loss of control that can lead to rollovers. It can help drivers maintain control during emergency maneuvers when their vehicles otherwise might spin out.

Describe the Blind-spot monitoring (BSM)

- It assists the driver by monitoring the rear and side areas of the vehicle during a lane change - This has a sensor that detects when you are too close to cars during a lane change

Describe the Traction control

- Reduces the driver's control of the vehicle preventing wheel slips - It monitors data from the wheel speed sensors, if one or more wheels are rotating faster or slower, the system takes action and applies breaking pressure to the slipping wheel until it regains traction - This allows drivers to apply heavy acceleration when merging with fast moving traffic and on loose or slippery surfaces

Describe the back-up camera

- Shows the blind spots behind the car - The camera is shown on the inside of the car on the dashboard so the driver can see what is behind them - This limits running over anything unseen such as children, pets, etc.

Describe the Lane-departure warning

- Track a vehicles position within a lane usually with a camera mounted on or near a rear view mirror - This system alerts the driver when the driver goes out of their lane when driving without using a turn signal - May include a sound, a vibrating seat or a vibrating steering wheel, and a visual warning - It helps direct a vehicle back into the lane through light steering or braking

Describe the Anti-lock brake system (ABS)

-Helps the driver maintain steering control in emergency braking situations by preventing wheel lock up and skidding particularly on slippery surfaces - It responds by modulating the brake pressure to those wheels

If your steering wheel was a clock at what hours should you position your hands at?

9 and 3

Where should the shoulder belt be positioned on your body?

Across your shoulder and through your chest/sternum

Describe the Adaptive/RADAR cruise control

Allows the vehicle to keep speed up or slow down automatically to keep a safe following distance. Designed to assist the driver and is not a substitute for safe and attentive driving practices.

How far away should you sit from the steering wheel ? Why?

As far away as possible, not too close to the airbags

How can you change the position of the shoulder belt?

By moving the seat belt adjuster up and down

Describe "hand-to-hand" steering technique and when you should use that technique.

If you are turning right you would push down with your right hand and pull up with your left hand. If you are turning left you would push down with your left hand and pull up with your right hand. Should use this technique in the highway

Describe what part of your body the head restraint should be positioned behind?

It should level with the top of your head, directly behind the back of your head

Describe the Automatic Emergency braking

This helps stop the car when it gets too close to hitting another car. Once that it senses it is getting too close and the car is not slowing down, the automatic emergency brakes enable

What should you check for before entering the vehicle?

Tires Vandalism Children Blind spots Transmission fluid Tools Body damage Broken glass Objects Pets

What is the purpose of the head restraint?

To prevent your head from going too far back during an accident causing a serious injury

Describe "hand-over-hand" steering technique and what driving maneuvers it should be used for.

When you turn you reach the hand that's on the side your turning across/over your other hand and grab the wheel. Used to make sharp turns or U-turns and driving slowly

What are the limitations of "traditional" mirror settings?

You have to physically move your body and look behind you to see your blind spots and to see your own car instead of the ones around you
