Computer based application used for routine code assignment. This technology allows the coder to use technology and software assistance to find and assign codes correctly. In making coding as accurate as possible (includes current coding guidelines and edits) to obtain the highest dollar amount justified one is said to be "optimizing".

Disadvantages of Using an Encoder

Experienced coder can find it slower because they don't have booked based notes If encoder is not linked to hospital claims management database, requires double entry Software must be updated every time new releases are issued and cases coded around the update must be monitored

Encoder Applications

Used primarily for inpatient and ambulatory surgery records Always contains I-9, I-10 and should contain CPT/HCPCS codes Can look up a code from text or verify a code number Must be familiar with coding to use
